Where does oval end and oblong begin?

Our costume group keeps using oval in two different ways while planning a decorative mask workshop. One person is describing a face category, while another is describing the paper pattern on the table. I want to clear up the vocabulary before we start choosing shapes for the paper templates. I am considering face shape measurements as a starting point for that discussion. A label might help the conversation, but it should not replace checking the actual dimensions. The notes we have so far mention facial length, the widest area, and the jaw outline. The briefing should make it obvious when we are naming an outline and when we are checking dimensions. There will be time to try paper versions, and I would like the terminology to support that process. How would you explain this without turning a simple introduction into a long lecture?
